Pics on removing a sunroof for a 2004 Highlander to replace the cables

Sunroof, removed

White end cap, remove this to pull slide and cable out

Slide and cable removed

Be sure to slide cable into proper track

This screw holds plastic frame to metal frame.  Remove only to pull out cable track (not necessary)

Old cable, mangled in motor space.  You can see how the two cables interact with the motor here.

Slide cable into track after end cap removed

Be sure the side nubs on the slide sit correctly in the track

Another slide nub

One of at least 8 total nuts that need to be removed to pull sunroof out of vehicle.  Two on each side, four in front.  The sides also have a bar attached to the vehicle that needs to be removed (see other pics)

sunroof nut

One of two side bars on the one side (same on both sides).  You can remove the whole bar (easier) from the vehicle

Another side bar with two bolts

Motor bolts

There are four drainage tubes, one in each corner.  Squeeze the clamp, pull the tube

The tubes are in each corner of the sunroof

This piece has one nut on the left side of the pic.  It holds the front of the sunroof in place.  Once it's removed, tilt the piece down and pull out of slot on right.

Another of the four nuts in the front

Ceiling plug.  I used a flat bar to pry this out, and they just push right back in.

Slide your flat bar on the side and gently pull down.  The metal clamps inside will release.

You have to pull these column covers out away from the side to avoid damaging the ceiling panel.  Slide your flat bar behind and pull gently, then pull the ceiling panel out.

This piece is somewhat difficult.  The three pieces on top you can see facing you slide in first, and there are three metal clips that slide into place on the outboard side.  The forward and rearward pieces have two holes they have to sit in.  It took a little more time and patience.

Ceiling hand holds are removed with a phillips screwdriver.  Pop open the cover with a flat bar.

The visor hangers turn to the side and pull down.  Reverse to replace.

This is the cover to the visor hinge.  Slide the flat bar around one of the sides and pop it off, then remove the visor with a phillips.

    1. I got mine from the dealer. Part number 63205-0E020 on the 2004, but should be the same for most.

  4. Sorry for getting back to this so much later. I worked the longest on these two pieces (one on each side). I did use the metal pieces, but I think I put them on the piece first, then slid them up in. It took a lot of trial and error, and I'm not sure I got them to click fully into place, but they worked from what I could tell.

  7. Thanks for the pics. Our sunroof was stuck fully open. I just needed it closed. One thing I figured out is the black shields covering the belt is the "driving" part and the white shields were just the holders to keep the extra belt when the glass was closed. After taking out the motor I was able to grab the belt and manipulate it closed with some needle nose pliers. So moving the belt sides little by little towards the white shields I could get it closed. Thanks again.
